In a video produced by the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Denmark, two-time Oscar-nominated filmmaker Joshua Oppenheimer gives advice to young and aspiring filmmakers.
What does the acclaimed director have to say about the art of cinema? First of all, make sure it’s really what you want to do. ‘Very simply, it’s really hard to be a filmmaker, so if you can do anything else don’t do it’, he says.
‘But if you have to be a filmmaker… don’t give up… keep going. And don’t listen to anyone who tells you how it should be done’. In presenting the story, ‘reject the distance of objectivity, and swap it for… the intimacy of truth’. The stories we tell should come from deep searching and a genuine interest, not a superficial plot. ‘Follow your fascination’, he says. ■
